Origin of Sarees
Sarees are considered to be one amongst the ancient wears since the starting of mankind. Saree in Sanskrit means “strip of cloth”. The mention of Saree is even found in the Rig Veda. The traces of a garment similar to saree is found in the days of Indus Valley Civilization too. The ancient name of Saree is Nivi or Nivi Bandh. There were no stitched blouses in ancient days. Women used to cover their upper body with “Uttariya” or “kurpasaka” which was a tight breast band, as mentioned in the works of great poet Kalidasa ji.
Spiritual significance of wearing Sarees
Saree is considered to be the most auspicious wear amongst all traditional wear. Saree is considered sacred, this is the reason why the idols of Hindu deities are seen wearing this. It is considered that saree imbibes positive energy from the environment. Women are more energy sensitive than men. Saree provides protection to our body as well as chakras (energy centers). In modern times, Saree is draped from the waist to the shoulder. It covers Mooladhara (Root Chakra) to the Sahastrara (Crown Chakra) in one go. Means, there is no stitched part in the saree. The stitched part is considered to create energy blockage, spiritually. This is the reason why the priests, men and women wear unstitched clothes in Poojas. In ancient times there were no petticoats. In those times, the length of the saree was nine yards. Women used to drape sarees in such an elegant way that body parts were unrevealing. Still in South India women wear nine yards sarees in temples and pious occasions. With time the length of saree got shortened (that is 5.5 meters) and petticoats came in trend, to tuck the saree. But the popularity of Saree did not fade with time.
