But we also give the reason or logic why you should opt for traditional sarees, this festive season.

Origin of Sarees

Sarees are considered to be one amongst the ancient wears since the starting of mankind. Saree in Sanskrit means “strip of cloth”. The mention of Saree is even found in the Rig Veda. The traces of a garment similar to saree is found in the days of Indus Valley Civilization too. The ancient name of Saree is Nivi or Nivi Bandh. There were no stitched blouses in ancient days. Women used to cover their upper body with “Uttariya” or “kurpasaka” which was a tight breast band, as mentioned in the works of great poet Kalidasa ji.

Spiritual significance of wearing Sarees

Saree is considered to be the most auspicious wear amongst all traditional wear. Saree is considered sacred, this is the reason why the idols of Hindu deities are seen wearing this. It is considered that saree imbibes positive energy from the environment. Women are more energy sensitive than men. Saree provides protection to our body as well as chakras (energy centers). The spiritual significance of wearing Silk saree on pious and sacred occasions is, it attracts electromagnetic energy which activates our chakras positively. In modern times, Saree is draped from the waist to the shoulder. In a way saree covers three lower chakras (root chakra, sex chakra and naval chakra) and mid chakra (heart chakra) which are prone to negative energy. Saree provides protection to all our chakras. It covers Mooladhara (Root Chakra) to the Sahastrara (Crown Chakra) in one go. Means, there is no stitched part in the saree. The stitched part is considered to create energy blockage, spiritually. In India, women wear sarees and also cover their head with the Pallu as they allow positive energy to flow to their crown chakra. This is the reason why the priests, men and women wear unstitched clothes in Poojas.

In ancient times there were no petticoats. In those times, the length of the saree was nine yards. Women used to drape sarees in such an elegant way that body parts were unrevealing. Still in South India women wear nine yards sarees in temples and pious occasions. With time the length of saree got shortened (that is 5.5 meters) and petticoats came in trend, to tuck the saree. But the popularity of Saree did not fade with time.

Sarees for Karwachauth

Karwachauth is celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm in the Northern part of India. Karwachauth is the occasion where Solah Shringaar (sixteen embellishments) is given utmost priority. The upper garment and lower garment comes under these embellishments. In this festival married women wear new and bright traditional clothes, specially Sarees. Shades of Pink and Red are mostly picked by the women as they are considered most auspicious. The colours have their association with the traits of love and passion. These shades look good on all complexions. Banarasi or Kanchipuram, Uppada or Paithani are best suited for this occasion.

Diwali

Diwali or Deepawali is the most celebrated festival in all parts of India. All members of the family wear new clothes, especially the traditional clothes. Diwali is the occasion where women wear heavy and elegant sarees and perform Pooja in the evening. Diwali is associated with the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The Devi is seen wearing a Green saree, sitting on a pink Lotus. Green is the colour of growth and abundance. Whereas, the other significant deity of Deepawali is Lord Ganesh. The colour associated with Lord Ganesh is yellow who is the harbinger of happiness. Women wear shades of Green and Yellow mostly, to attract the energies of these deities to their home.
